Capacity Building Programme on Action Research for PRTs and GTs of Gyalshing and Soreng Districts

A two-day Capacity Building Programme on Action Research for Primary Teachers (PRTs) and Graduate Teachers (GTs) was organized by DIET Gyalshing on 29th and 30th July 2026 at the DIET Gyalshing Hall.
The primary objective of the programme was to build the capacity of in-service teachers to identify classroom-related issues and address them through systematic Action Research.

Objectives of the Programme
i) To develop an understanding of the concept, need, and steps of Action Research.
ii) To equip teachers with tools and techniques for data collection and analysis.
iii) To help teachers prepare and implement Action Research in their own classrooms.
iv) To promote reflective and evidence-based teaching practices.

A total of 22 teachers from 11 BACs of the Gyalshing and Soreng districts participated in the programme. Two participants from each BAC attended the workshop.
Day-wise Proceedings

Day 1: Foundation of Action Research (29th July 2026)
Inaugural Session: The programme was inaugurated by Mrs. Parumita Rai, Principal, DIET Gyalshing. In her address, she remarked, “Action Research is a mirror that enables teachers to reflect upon and improve their own classroom practices.”
Technical Session 1: The concept, characteristics, and significance of Action Research were presented by Mrs. Sadhna Gurung, Lecturer, DIET Gyalshing.
Technical Session 2: The steps of the Action Research cycle—Identify, Plan, Act, Observe, and Reflect were explained using real classroom examples.
Group Activity: Teachers identified five major classroom and school-related challenges, such as low academic achievement, poor attendance, lack of interest in Science, and difficulties in reading and comprehension.

Day 2: Tools, Implementation, and Report Writing 

Technical Session -  Various tools for data collection, including observation schedules, questionnaires, interviews, achievement tests, and checklists, were introduced. Sample tools were demonstrated and discussed.  Participants were guided on data analysis and Action Research report writing. The format and guidelines for preparing an Action Research report were also provided.Two teachers from each BAC presented their proposed Action Research topics and action plans.

Each presentation was followed by constructive feedback from the Principal, DIET Gyalshing, and the Lecturers, who also serve as Block Coordinators for different blocks.
All 22 participants were awarded certificates for successfully completing 12 hours of Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
Teachers developed draft Action Research proposals based on the classroom challenges identified in their respective schools.Participants gained clarity on conducting, implementing, and documenting Action Research in school settings.

The two-day programme was highly interactive and practical in nature. It encouraged PRTs and GTs to become reflective practitioners and to use Action Research as an effective tool for professional growth and classroom improvement.

The programme concluded with insightful remarks from the Principal, DIET Gyalshing, followed by a vote of thanks delivered by the Programme Coordinator, Mr. Dhiraj Chettri, Lecturer, DIET Gyalshing. The participants expressed their gratitude to DIET Gyalshing for organizing the capacity-building programme.
